Introduction

a boy manning a fish trap. a furrier with his furs. a father and daughter showing off their fish. 3 resreational fisherman on their motorboat. What is the Forest Use Survey?

The Forest Use Survey is a snapshot of household resource use in the Tanana Valley. ABFC partnered with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry, University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, and University of Alaska Fairbanks School of Management to find out how people in the Tanana Valley use their forest. Established survey techniques were used with oversight provided by UAF's Office of Research Integrity..

Economy, ecology, community, the Forest Use Survey integrates all three. It provides a working example of the ABFC definition of sustainability. In order to sustain our partnership with the land we must first find out if and how residents use it. This use implies land value both real and potential. This survey echoes the people's voice, and provides information to land managers and policy makers that can aid in decision making and gap analysis.
